Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral fraud is a significant issue in many democracies, and Nigeria is no exception. In Gusau Local Government, Zamfara State, allegations of electoral fraud have marred several elections, leading to questions about the credibility and legitimacy of electoral outcomes. Electoral fraud, such as vote-buying, ballot box stuffing, and manipulation of results, undermines the democratic process, leading to a loss of public trust in governance and the electoral system. This study seeks to examine how electoral fraud in Gusau Local Government impacts public confidence in governance, focusing on the consequences for the legitimacy of elected officials and the public’s overall perception of the democratic system (Aminu & Sulaiman, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral fraud is a widespread issue in many local governments, including Gusau, where it significantly affects voter confidence and undermines the legitimacy of the electoral process. These fraudulent activities diminish citizens' trust in elected officials, often leading to disengagement from political participation. Despite efforts by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to mitigate electoral malpractices, fraud remains a challenge in Gusau, resulting in a loss of faith in governance. This study will assess how electoral fraud has affected public confidence in governance and will explore the long-term consequences for democratic stability in Gusau Local Government (Shamsuddeen & Hassan, 2023).
